How to use the text to speech feature on your Galaxy phone or tablet.
Certain applications possess the capability to verbally communicate with you, either as an alternative to or in conjunction with displaying text on the screen. This is particularly useful for in-game chats or navigation applications, with many of them utilizing the integrated text-to-speech functions of your Galaxy device.
Note: Text to speech differs from the Accessibility screen reader. While Talkback utilizes the same built-in text-to-speech system on your Samsung device, it is specifically designed to aid users with visual impairments.
- Access Settings.
- Swipe to and select General Management.
- Choose Text-to-speech.
Here are the settings you can modify:
Preferred engine: Select a speech engine. Each has distinct voices and available languages. Engine-specific settings can be accessed by tapping the settings icon for this option.
Language: Set the language for text-to-speech. Only the installed languages on your system will be accessible.
Speech rate: Customize the voice speed according to your preferences.
Pitch: Modify the voice pitch, making it higher or lower.
Play: Listen to a sample of the voice at the selected rate and pitch.
Reset: Restore the rate and pitch to their default settings.
The language options for text-to-speech are determined by the language settings on your phone. If you wish to add a new language for text to speech, you'll need to download and install the language on your device.
To download new voices:
- Navigate to Settings and swipe to access General Management.
- Select Text-to-speech.
- Tap the Settings icon next to Preferred Engine.
- Choose Install voice data.
- Scroll to the desired voice data. For the Samsung engine, tap the download icon, then tap Download.
Switch the language:
Go to Settings, swipe to and select General Management.
Choose Text-to-speech.
Select Language, then tap the language you want to use for text to speech.
