Nightography tips
We asked Danny to share her tips and tricks on nailing the perfect shot in low light.
1. Location, location
Where you shoot is everything. Think dive bars, romantic dimly lit restaurants, gigs, bowling or arcades. They’re not just great for backdrops but they all have amazing atmospheres that really comes through in your photos. They all have different light sources which can be fun to play around with. Colourful neon lights can give your shots a futuristic, sci-fi feel. Shooting by candlelight gives off warm and romantic vibes. Even normal street lighting looks beautiful – especially after it’s rained and the pavement is wet. It's a good excuse to grab some mates and explore your city.
2. Pro Mode
Give yourself editing flexibility by shooting in Pro Mode. It will allow you to capture more details and give you the freedom to play around with colours and contrasts when editing your photos.
3. Keep things steady
Stability is super important when you’re shooting in low light as using a slower shutter speed to suck in more light leaves your photos susceptible to camera shake. To avoid this, set your phone up on a tripod and use the S Pen to capture the shot.
If you don’t have a tripod, try shooting in Burst Mode, especially if your subjects are moving. It allows you to capture a series of rapid shots without stopping, giving you more options to choose from.
4. Have fun!
Take photos from different heights and angles. Play around with perspective. Encourage your subject to mix up their poses. Add another light source in the background to add more depth to your photo. You’d be surprised at how your shots turn out when you loosen up.
