[2023] How to register and control devices using SmartThings on your Samsung Smart TV
You can use the SmartThings app on your Samsung Smart TV to register and manage your home's smart devices. These include SmartThings IoT devices, smart appliances, and even legacy devices. Bixby can also be used to control your devices with a simple command. And if you need to see all of your devices at once, you can use the Map view feature on your Samsung Smart TV.
Note: Separate user consent is required for automatic device detection and connection. This function may not be supported depending on the product or model.
In 2023, SmartThings will provide a more seamless experience. Samsung smart devices will be automatically detected and registered in SmartThings without the need for manual scanning or a complex registration process. Once a device is detected and automatically registered, a pop-up message will appear on the TV, and the newly added device can be viewed in the SmartThings Device tab, either in Map view or Card view.
For more information about using the SmartThings app on your Samsung TV, please refer to our additional SmartThings guide. Some Samsung products will require a separate SmartThings Dongle accessory as well. To learn about connecting devices using this accessory, please see our SmartThings Dongle guide.
In addition to the automatic device connection method, you can register your device directly in SmartThings using the following instructions.
SmartThings IoT devices
Once you’ve set up your SmartThings account on your phone or tablet, you can then view and control your registered devices straight from your TV. To register new devices to SmartThings and use them from your mobile device and TV, please follow the steps below:
1) Enable the SmartThings Hub feature on the TV.
2) Navigate to and open the SmartThings app on your phone or tablet, and then tap Add (the plus icon). Tap Add device.
3) Swipe to and tap By device type, then tap your device, and then tap the brand if needed.
Note: You can also tap By brand instead.
4) Tap Start, and then select a location and room if prompted. Tap Next.
5) Follow the on-screen instructions to add your device.
6) On your Smart TV, log in to the same Samsung account that you are logged in to on your phone or tablet. Then, you will see the device registered on the SmartThings app on your TV. Select the device to begin using it.
Legacy devices
A Legacy device is an appliance that does not support SmartThings but can be controlled through the infrared sensor on your IR remote control. To control legacy devices using the SmartThings app on a TV, please refer to the following steps:
1) Point the IR remote control at the legacy device, and then press the Power button so that the TV detects the IR signal.
2) A pop-up notification will appear on the TV. Select Registration, and then confirm that you would like to control the device. Select Yes.

Registering a TV, smart appliance, or IoT device from the mobile SmartThings app
You can use the mobile SmartThings app to register your TV, smart appliance, or various IoT devices. Some IoT devices can only be registered using the mobile app. Simply tap the Add icon (the plus sign) in the mobile app to begin adding and registering a device.
Command your Smart TV to play your favorite content instead of reaching for the remote with Bixby. You can control your TV and other connected devices around your home as well. Setting up Bixby with your Samsung account will automatically connect it to your SmartThings devices, too. Simply say “Hi, Bixby” to begin controlling your smart home.
From the mobile SmartThings app, you can use the TV remote control’s functions, such as on and off, channel, volume, and the four directional buttons. You can also use functions like search, APPS, Ambient Mode, mobile camera, and other functions from the mobile app. The default functions are Remote, Search, Source, and Apps. Other features such as UG, Ambient, and Art are only available on supported products.
In the mobile SmartThings app, you can automatically launch apps installed on your TV through automations (including modes and routines). With automations, you can turn on your TV at desired times and automatically launch frequently used apps.
Note: Only apps registered in the Apps list can be set for automation.
Note: If you are having trouble with your Samsung Smart TV, you can check for available software updates, as these may contain a fix for your issue. Device screenshots and menus may vary depending on the model and software version.
